Cereal grains are among the most basic of foodstuffs. Just since 2005, when it traded quietly below $2.00/bushel --- and the whole futures contract was worth less than $10,000, Corn nearly quadrupled in price to a new all-time high above $7.50. It was then more than halved when it plunged to below $3.00 but soared again to another new all-time high above $8.40. Now it has been halved again, recently trading below $4.00.

Similarly, Wheat in 2005 was trading at a subdued $3.00/bushel. Three years later, the CBOT's soft red had more than quadrupled to $13.00 --- while hard red spring traded in Minneapolis soared to an astounding $24.00! Since then, all three classes of wheat have traded in a wide range mostly between $4.00 and $10.00 --- and are currently at the low end of that range.

And who knew Oats could be such a slumbering giant. A market generally ignored and that for decades had traded mostly between $1.00 and $2.00/bushel, in 2013 it ran up to $6.00 --- about $2.00 over corn! It, too, has been more than halved --- recently trading well below $3.00.
